11:00 – 12:30 (London) on each day
This course is specifically for school counsellors and those who supervise them. It was created on behalf of the Office of Overseas Schools, US Department of State, Regional Education Officer, Dr. Christine Brown.
This course will cover prevention and response to all forms of abuse and neglect and is delivered by a multidisciplinary team. Participants will learn the impact of trauma on learning, elements of disclosure and trauma-informed response, and evidence-based counselling practice for those working with children who have been harmed or have caused harm. An emphasis will be placed on participation and practice.
Counsellors will have opportunities to practice appropriate case response, question formation and trauma informed case counselling approaches. Teams will use real cases and the International Task Force for Child Protection allegation protocol to formulate appropriate response. The distinct roles of the child protection designate and the school counsellor will be explained and how counsellors can support school-based child protection response teams. The counsellor’s role in record keeping, continuity of evidence, and victim and family support will be addressed.
